Math Vocabulary

Graphs, plots, and coordinate planes
survey- Collecting information by asking many people the same question and recording their answers
data- pieces of collected information
key- part of a pictograph that explains what each picture represents
pictograph- A way to show data by using pictures or symbols
bar graph- a graph that uses bars to compare data
scale- the numbers that show the units used on a graph
ordered pair- a set of two numbers that names a point on a coordinate plane
coordinate plane- a grid used to locate points
line graph- a graph that shows how data changes over a period of time
plot- to locate and mark a point using the given ordered pair
line plot-a way to organize data on a line
Probability
unlikely- an event that will probably not happen
likely- and event that will probably happen
impossible- and event that will never happen
certain- and event that is sure to happen
equally likely- outcomes that have the same chance of happening
outcome- a possible result of a game or experiment
less likely- and outcome that has a lesser chance of happening
more likely- an outcome that has a greater chance of happening
predict- to tell what may happen using information you know
U.S. Customary Units
foot (ft) - A customary unit of length. 1 foot equals 12 inches.
inch (in.) - a standard unti for measuring length
mile (mi)- a customary unit of length. 1 mile equals 5,280 feet.
yard (yd)- a customary unti of length. 1 yard equals 3 feet or 36 inches.
cup (c) - a customary unit of capacity.
capacity- the amount a container can hold
pint (pt) - a customary unti of capacity. 1 pint equals 2 cups.
quart (qt) - a customary unit of capacity. 1 quart equals 2 pints.
weight - a measure of how heavy an object is.
gallon (gal) - a customary unit of capacity. 1 gallon equals 4 quarts.
pound (lb) - a customary unit of weight. 1 pound equals 16 ounces.
ounce (oz) - a customary unti of weight.
ton (T) - A customary unit of weight. 1 ton equals 2000 pounds.
Metric Units
Centimeter (cm) - a metric unit of length
Meter (m) - a metric unit of length 1m=100cm
Milliliter(mL) - a metric unit of capacity
Kilometer (km) - a metric unit of length 1km=1,000m
Mass - a measure of the amount of matter in an object
Liter (L) - a metric unit of capacity 1L=1,000mL
Kilogram (kg) - a metric unit used to tell how heavy an object 1kg=1,000g
Gram (g) - a metric unit used to tell how heavy an object is
Fractions
halves - two equal pats of a whole
thirds- three equal parts of a whole
fourths- four equal parts of a whole
fifths- five equal parts of a whole
sixths- six equal parts of a whole
eighths- eight equal parts of a whole
tenths- ten equal parts of a whole
twelfths- twelve equal parts of a whole
numerator- the number above the fraction bar in a fraction; it tells how many equal parts are choosen
denominator- the number below the fraction bar in a fraction; it tells the total number of equal parts in the whole
fraction- a symbol that names equal parts of a whole or equal parts of a set
benchmark fraction- commonly used fractions such as 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, and 3/4.
mixed number- a number that has a whole number AND a fraction
equivalent- equal
Geometry
similar figure- figures that have the same shape. These figures can have the same size or a different size.
congruent figure- figures with the same shape AND same size
line of symmetry- a line that cuts a figure into 2 congruent sides (if you fold the figure down the line the sides would match)
reflection- when you flip a figure
translation- to slide an object
rotation- to turn an object
vertex- where 3 or more edges meet
edge- where 2 faces meet
face- plane figure (flat 2D figure) that makes up the solid figure
polygon - a closed plane figure made up of three or more straight sides
plane figure- a flat 2D figure
acute angle- an angle that is SMALLER than a right angle (less than 90 degrees)
right angle- a 90 degree angle. It has a "square" corner of which the corner of your paper will fit in perfectly
obtuse angle - an angle LARGER than a 90 degree angle
straight angle- 180 degrees. This angle looks like a line(think of opening a book and laying it flat on your desk).
